Tailored Monitoring Methodology (examples)

Once your Actions are well enough defined that you are clear on what they are intending to accomplish, for who, why and when, then you are ready to define specific your bespoke monitoring and impact assessment materials. Tailoring impact assessment to your Action(s) can enable you to: 

• prioritise which outcomes to monitor when resources are limited 

•  identify unintended outcomes, positive and negative  

•  include stakeholders in setting targets 

•  ensure you have a plan to collect data robustly and to timelines (baselining etc) 

•  define the core content of monitoring materials, such as survey questions, innovator data, community data, environmental data etc  

•  find the right balance between quantitative and qualitative analysis  

•  consider risks and limitations of the chosen data collection and analysis approaches 

These are example reports only, from pilot cities. They can be read all together or the table of contents browsed for key sections. The aim is simply to provide examples, they are not exhaustive of monitoring techniques.
 

Including:

• Include key stakeholders in defining the priority outcomes to monitor, the approaches to do so and what data is available / possible to collect. The value of monitoring and evaluation is in the ability to determine progress towards important impacts, and to take adaptive actions if needed. Therefore, consult as needed with colleagues who are economists, social scientists, environmental scientists, statisticians or qualitative researchers in order to help with the formation of approaches and materials and to ensure common pitfalls are avoided. This will help to maximise the credibility of your findings and ease of monitoring.
