Lisbon’s HUB-IN organised an event to celebrate this unique feature of the local heritage
Last April, the Innovation Center of Mouraria hosted the event Pop Up – There is Ceramics in Castle Hill, an initiative aimed at celebrating the important ceramic tradition that characterises the historic urban area of Lisbon. This handicraft activity dates back to Roman times and continues to be a rich, strong, and vibrant part of the local heritage to this day.
The diversity of ceramic shops and studios within Castle Hill reflects its cultural richness, combined with the creativity and innovation of local artists and entrepreneurs.
Different activities to rediscover the ceramic art
During the event, participants enjoyed a variety of activities, from lectures covering the history of local ceramics to practical workshops, where they could get their hands dirty and create their own works of art, guided by local master ceramists. The scavenger hunt led people on a journey of discovery through the streets of the Mouraria district, revealing curiosities and points of interest related to ceramics.
Additionally, the event featured an exhibition of ceramic pieces, showcasing a diversity of styles, techniques, and artistic expressions. From historic works to contemporary creations, each piece reflected the richness and diversity of the ceramic production in the region.
More than just an event, Pop Up – There is Ceramics in Castle Hill was a celebration of art and culture, as well as a tribute to the local community.
People enjoyed the event so much that they shared enthusiastic feedback and suggestions for new editions, thus demonstrating the relevance of the initiative in promoting this cultural heritage aspect of Castle Hill.
