HUB-IN contributes to the new vision for the future development of the Belfast Waterfront Promenade
Recently launched, the new vision Embracing the Belfast Waterfront aims to position Belfast as one of the world’s great waterfront cities.
Aware that the waterfront is an amazing natural asset for the city, this new framework is the starting point for the next 30 years of development. Similar to vibrant waterfront cities like Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Seattle, Belfast aspires to become a people-centric destination.
Unlocking Belfast’s potential
By adopting an integrated approach, the Waterfront Promenade aims to improve the area’s links to the rest of the city, enrich marine habitats and provide a focal point for leisure, employment, cycling, walking and tourism. Among other things, the vision includes plans for new pedestrian and cycle bridges across the Victoria Channel, as well as new public spaces, playgrounds, heritage trails, floating boardwalks, businesses and wetlands, moorings and cantilevered decking. The goal is to create a stand-out international destination that improves the quality of life for residents and showcases Northern Ireland to investors and visitors alike.
In this context, the Belfast HUB-IN project works to enhance the unique heritage of the Maritime Mile through digital innovation. Indeed, the development of this framework is the first measure of the HUB-IN Action Plan to be implemented by the city. The plan will be shared with creative industries interested in applying to the challenge call to inform the development of the HUB-IN prototypes with a clear overview of future developments of the Maritime Mile. The new approach was developed by the Belfast Waterfront Task Group, made up of representatives from charity Maritime Belfast Trust, Belfast City Council, Belfast Harbour, Titanic Quarter Limited, Tourism NI and the Departments for Communities, Infrastructure, the Economy and of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.
